2022 “THE BIG SHORT” STOCK PITCH COMPETITION

The McGill Investment Club (MIC) is proud to present its annual Stock Pitch Competition, with this year’s theme being The Big Short. On March 12th, 2022, teams of 1-4 will compete for a prize pool of $11,000 CAD. This competition is open to ALL undergraduate and graduate students worldwide.

How it Works:

January 28th, 2022 – Registration

  • Registration for The Big Short Stock Pitch Competition opens. Teams of 1-4 students can register down below. We will not be accepting any late registrations.

March 4th, 2022, 11:59PM ET – Preliminary Screening & Registration Deadline

  • Teams must submit their slide deck and a copy of their resumes to investmentclub@mail.mcgill.ca for a preliminary screening round. The slides and subject line should be titled ‘TEAM NAME – TBS Stock Pitch Competition’

March 7th, 2022 – Semifinalist Notification

  • The top 25 teams will be notified before March 7th. Selected teams must pay a delegate fee of $75CAD/team, which will be put into the prize pool. This fee must be paid before March 11th, 2022 or teams will forfeit their positions.

March 11th, 2022, 11:59PM ET – Final Slide Deck Deadline

  • Teams must submit their final slide deck to investmentclub@mail.mcgill.ca. The slides and subject line should be titled ‘TEAM NAME – TBS Stock Pitch Competition Finals’.

March 12th, 2022 – Pitch Day

  • Teams will be sent a Zoom link the day before with their respective breakout room. Each team will have 15 minutes to present, followed by a 10-minute Q&A session with judges.

  • 5 teams will be chosen to present in the final round, happening in the afternoon on the same day.

  • Winners will be announced at the end of the event.

Prize Pool:

1st Place – $5,000CAD
2nd Place – $3,000CAD
3rd Place – $1,000CAD
4th Place – $500CAD
5th Place – $500CAD

(NEW!) Superlatives:  

All semi-finalist teams are eligible to win superlative prizes, excluding the Best Speaker prize which will be awarded to a participant on a semi-finalist team. Winners will be selected by the MIC in conjunctions with judges.

Best First Year Team – $200 
Best All Female Team / Female Speaker – $200 
Best Formatting – $200 
Best Speaker – $200 
Best Inter-school Team – $200 

Slides and Presentation:

As per the name of the Big Short Stock Pitch Competition, delegates must create a short stock pitch only. The selected stock can be listed on any exchange but must have a minimum market capitalization of $1 billion USD and a minimum stock price of $5.00 USD. The submitted stock pitch deck must contain 15 slides or less, excluding a title slide and any appendices. Pitches must include the following sections: Company Overview, Investment Theses, Macro & Micro Factors, Financial Valuation, and Risks & Catalysts. Each team will have 15 minutes to present, followed by a 10 minute Q&A session with judges. A comprehensive breakdown of judging criteria can be found in the competition rulebook here.

Please complete the registration form below and send your pitch deck and resumes in separate .pdf files to investmentclub@mail.mcgill.ca by March 4th, 2022 at 11:59 PM Eastern Time.

Remember – be extremely thorough, but informative and precise. The time constraint of 15 minutes should encourage you to focus on the core material elements that defend your thesis.
